Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Scotland, standing 1344m over the town of Fort William in the Scottish highlands. Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the UK. There are several paths to the summit ranging from a tough few hours walk on the marked tourist route, to the more committing and technically complicated ascents of its north face and ridges. Popular routes to the summit of Ben Nevis include the Carn Mor Dearg arête (the CMD as its known), Tower Ridge, Observatory Ridge, Ledge route on Carn Dearg leading to the summit plateau and in winter conditions a number of large gullies varying in difficulty provide some interesting routes. Ben Nevis is also the location of the UK's highest war memorial which sits proudly at its summit. The first recorded ascent of Ben Nevis is by James Robertson on the 17th of August 1771.
